The All Star Youth
Tennis Scholarship Trust (“ASYTS”) was set up following
a discussion on the annual Spanish Tennis Holiday to El Casco in Spain
in 2006. The inspiration was Sebastian Wray, who had dedicated himself
to the sport of tennis and the Wandsworth Tennis Centre from the age
of 11 and whom the coaches, Ben Jackson and Ben White, felt could benefit
from a higher level of training and development which would ultimately
be an advantage to the wider tennis community of Wandsworth. A Spanish semi-professional
player and coach, who saw Sebastian playing, undertook to arrange a
place at a Spanish Tennis Academy. After the project was underway, it
was considered that the Trust should be a longer term effort to benefit
all young people in Wandsworth who were dedicated to the sport of tennis
and had shown the same exceptional commitment to the community. Pledges
were obtained from several people of £500 each to provide the
initial seed money to initiate the Trust and the administration was
set up including the selection of the four Trustees. An invitation was
issued to Sir Michael Jenkins to be the Trust’s patron, to which
he kindly agreed. A Trust deed was
drawn up (by Davenport Lyons Solicitors) and formally signed and executed
on 27 August 2007. Due to the current small size of the charity we are
not registered with the Charity Commission. We have however been approved
for Gift Aid Status with Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs which
will be applicable to all donations from the date the trust was set
up (27 August 2007), provided a gift aid declaration has been obtained
from the donor All the people involved
have contributed, and are contributing, their services and knowledge
as volunteers to maximise the amounts that can be given as grants. This
includes all the Trustees, our Patron, the solicitors who drew up the
trust documents and Charity Commission application and advise generally,
and the accountants who will be administering the formal aspects of
the Charity. We would like to thank those and all others who have contributed
money and support so far and hope that many more will contribute over
the years. We are delighted to say that we have made our first disbursement to Sebastian Wray who began studying at a tennis academy in Barcelona in January 2008. This should be the first of many grants, which we see as being one-offs to give young people who have shown promise and dedication to tennis an opportunity they may not have had otherwise to develop a career in tennis, whether as a playing professional or a coach. We also hope that those young people will return to Wandsworth Tennis Centre on a regular basis, to pass on what they have learnt to other young people in Wandsworth. We would be very grateful for contributions to the Trust from our fellow players at the Tennis Centre – please help us by sending a donation, using where possible the Gift Aid Declaration below, to: The ASYTS Office, 11 Amberley Court, London SW9 7HL. |
